Big night for young drivers at Rosecroft

Ft. Washington, MD — Developing future stars in harness racing can run in cycles. You can go for years at some tracks without young stars developing, and then there is the situation at Rosecroft, which best resembles the spin cycle of a washing machine right now.

Driving amongst a solid colony of veterans, the future of harness racing in the mid-atlantic has potential if these young bucks stay grounded and heed the lessons learned while driving in a competitive group.

Sunday night at Rosecroft, veteran Allan Davis won three races and several young understudies, none of which can legally drink an alcoholic beverage, each gained victories.

Luke Hanners, 20, took the $11,750 Open Handicap for pacers with Rocktavious for the third time in his last six tries. The 7-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover won for the sixth time this year for owner Bib Roberts and trainer Megan Roberts in 1:51.3. Admiral Ballsy hung on for second after a thrilling side by side duel with Jack Quick for about five-eighths of a mile. Rocktavious ($4.00) and Hanners patiently sat the pocket and blasted by the dueling foes for the pacer’s 37th career win.

Trae Porter had a driving double as the 19-year-old scored with B A Rocket ($15.80) and Road Ready Wes ($11.60). Cole Olsen, 18, won for the second time this meet with Hilarious Lou ($12.40), and 20-year-old Declan Donoway scored with Mr Jagerbomber ($5.80).

While Eric Davis is old enough to enjoy adult beverages if he chooses, the 24-year-old won with the popular Maryland bred Winbak Carl ($8.60) who picked up his 42nd lifetime win in 252 starts. Davis trains the 11-year-old for Susan Baker.

Davis’ Uncle Allan netted his hat trick with Boot Leg ($3.80) and Talking Blues ($8.00), both owned by Twin Ponds Stable and trained by John Hollingsworth. White Rolls ($3.40) won for the first time this year as Davis got him home for owner Tammy Crescenze and trainer Amanda Malone.

Pat Berry, Frank Milby, Roger Plante, Russell Foster, and Ken Weckstein also had driving wins. Berry’s win with Starship gave trainer Megan Roberts a training double on the night.

With three nights of the fall meet left, an injured Eddie Davis Jr. is leading Milby by four wins. Jonathan Roberts is third with 29 and Jason Thompson is fourth with 26. Davis’ triple tied him with John Wagner for fifth with 24 wins.

Trainer Arlene Cameron will win the training dash title with 31 winners, while Brian Callahan, who has won at a 31 percent clip this meet, is tied for second with Roberts with 15 wins. Shaun Callahan and Trevor Stafford are tied for fourth with 14.
