Field set for Elitlopp

by Karsten Bønsdorf, , USTA Newsroom Senior Correspondent

The field for the upcoming Elitlopp next Sunday became complete Saturday afternoon as Canadian-bred Truculent became the 16th and last trotter to be invited to Europe’s most prestigious mile event.

Truculent, a lightly raced 7-year-old trotter, was an easy winner with Johnny Takter in the bike at Gävle, Sweden in 1.51.4f winning his third race in just as many starts this year.

Truculent, who under the name of Northern Eternity was sold in Lexington in 2008 for $25,000 is bred by River Ridge Farm, Ottawa.

He is sired by Revenue S, who is the sire of Hambletonian-winner Market Place – and Reven d’Amour who like Truculent has also earned a spot the Elitlopp field.

Truculent never raced in the United States, but was brought to Europe.

Going into the Elitlopp at age 7, he has just 36 starts under his belt, but has won 20 races.

The impact of North American bloodlines is as always significant. Five of the entrants were bred and raised in North America and North American stallions sired seven.

The draw for the two eliminations will take place later today.
