Freshman stakes season underway at the Ocean

Berlin, MD —  On Monday (Aug. 9) the Maryland Standardbred Fund (foaled) stakes for 2-year-olds went to post at Ocean Downs.

In the first $12,850 split for pacing fillies, reinsman Victor Kirby tucked Sweet Kiss (Sweet Lou) in third until the last turn and then charged down the stretch to stop the timer in 1:59, leaving the pacesetter Predict The Future (Rusty’s All In) to settle for second. Sweet Kiss is trained and leased by Mike Hall and bred by Fred Hertrich III.

The lone division for the trotting colts and geldings went for a purse of $22,650. The ‘Captain’ Corey Callahan sent his charge Wolfpack Russ (Glidemaster) to the front and never looked back in the gate-to-wire victory for owners Stuart Chambers Racing Bcjm Inc., Divine Horse Racing and Cinbrew Enterprises. Shaun Callahan was the trainer and Winbak Farm was the breeder. Tungsten Tim (Lockkeeper) held on for place.

Kirby drove his second stakes win on the card behind Two More Dreams (Dream Away), controlling every fraction of the race in the second $12,850 division for pacing fillies, stopping the clock in 1:59.4. Smokey’s Passion (Roddy’s Bags Again) was able to get within a half-length at the wire for second. Les Givens trains Two More Dreams for owners Nanticoke Racing Inc., Henry Faragalli III, Arthur Feeney and Daniel Doane. Winbak Farm was the breeder.

The 2-year-old stakes action will continue on Wednesday (Aug. 11) at Ocean Downs with the pacing colts and geldings and the trotting fillies.
