Italy’s Zacon Gio extends winning streak

The 4-year-old Italian trotter Zacon Gio won his ninth in a row Saturday night (June 29) at the Capannelle track in Rome.

Zacon Gio, who is trained by German-born Holger Ehlert and had Roberto Vecchione in the bike, won the prestigious Gran Premio Tino Triossi over the 1-5/16th mile distance in 1:54.3f.

The purse for the winner was $75,000.

Zacon Gio, who recently beat Face Time Bourbon, the best French 4-year-old, in a race at Modena, is sired by Ruty Grif, he by Varenne. Ruty Grif was a very talented trotter as a 2-year-old but failed to meet expectations. He raced 29 times and won just four races and earned short of $200,000.

Zacon Gio is by far his best offspring and with Saturday’s purse, he now has earnings of $460,000.

The mare division, raced over the mile, was also won by a trotter with Vecchione in the bike. Zabriskie OK, sired by Conway Hall, was an easy winner in 1:56.2f. She is trained by Alessandro Gocciadoro.
