Maryland stakes season opens for 2-year-olds

Berlin, MD — Ocean Downs hosted the Maryland Standardbred Fund Stakes for Maryland-foaled 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings and pacing fillies on Thursday (Aug. 20).

The lone $16,925 race for male trotters opened the card. Trainer-driver Les Givens sent Funnyfunnyriddle (Lockkeeper) to the front through the :31.4 first quarter, opened up by three lengths at the half, and finished 6-1/2 lengths in front of Trent’s A Lock (Lockkeeper) in 2:05. Funnyfunnyriddle is owned by breeder James Magno in partnership with Nanticoke Racing Inc. and Joseph Fonte.

The $12,250 first split for freshman pacing fillies saw Summering (Somebeachsomewhere) and Victor Kirby leave the field in their dust, winning by 11 lengths in their 1:57.2 gate-to-wire victory. Turtle Time (Roddy’s Bags Again) charged down the stretch to take the place position. Brett Pelling trains the winner for owner-breeder Frederick Hertrich III.

In the $12,400 second division for pacing fillies, Russell Foster tucked Wowie Zowie (Cam’s Rocket) in the three-hole until the last quarter, where it was a battle down the stretch with leader SJ’s Special Kay (Russell Hanover). When the clock stopped in 1:58, Wowie Zowie was a neck in front. Russell Foster is also the owner while his wife Megan handles the training duties, and Michael Hans is the winning breeder.
