MGM purchase of Yonkers full of complications

Columbus, OH — While the New York State Gaming Commission approved the purchase of Yonkers Raceway by MGM, the transition will be a complex one, with the specifics of who in New York can — and can’t — accept wagers on sports playing no small part.

According to a report from gaming news portal usbets.com, the Commission approved the purchase of Yonkers Raceway from the Rooney family for $850 million after over six months of commission review was needed to ensure the legality of the transaction given its complexity.

For the time being, the Yonkers casino remains limited to its 5,000 video lottery terminals and cannot offer live-dealer table games, unlike four upstate commercial casinos and seven Native American casinos in the Empire State. Likewise, despite competition across from the Hudson River at The Meadowlands, Yonkers will not be able to offer sports betting without significant legislative action.
