Milby wins four on Sunday at Rosecroft

Ft. Washington, MD — Over the past couple of weeks, Jonathan Roberts and John Wagner had closed some ground on Frank Milby at the top of the Rosecroft dash driver standings. Sunday night (May 12), Milby may have ended the competition, winning four races on a cold, rainy night at Rosecroft Raceway.

In the opener, Milby won a war of attrition with Bo Breeze ($8.60), where more horses were seemingly parked then on the pylons, brushing three wide to a win in 1:54.4 for the Murray Stable.

Makin Money Fast, who was injured in his only start of 2018 as a 3-year old, a win in 1:54, gave Milby his second win of the night. The son of Dontloseyourdayjob went wire-to-wire in 1:55.4 for trainer Brian Callahan, Gloria Kinnamon and Jessica Sutton.

Milby guided his own trainee Artic Adventure, owned by his mom, Candy Milby, to a tough first over score in 1:52.4.

Milby won the finale with Redwood Again in 1:54.2 for Courtney Brooks and trainer Rusty Cox.

The featured events of the night all produced surprising payouts.

In the first $12,500 Open Pace, Southwind Masimo got a gorgeous second-over trip from owner-trainer Art Stafford Jr., nailing pocket sitting Mckenry, Sams Triple Crown and pacesetter Always The Sun in a four horse photo. It was a season’s best third win in 1:51.3 and he returned $55.20 for his backers.

In the $12,500 Maryland Open Pace, Abelard Hanover ($38.80) turned back the clock, retaking the lead from 45-1 shot Jeremes General after the opening quarter, and fending off a bold brush from Allie’s Finale who was off his flank until faltering in the final turn. Jason Thompson got the 11-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover home the rest of the way in 1:52.2 for the Four Maples Stable and giving Gary Cameron II a training double. It was the 61st career win for the winner of more than $800,000 lifetime.

Thompson also drove Cameron’s other winner, Boot Leg, to a victory for the Twin Ponds Stable.

In the final co-feature, the biggest pari-mutuel puzzler of the night came in the $12,500 featured trot. Fashion Smile has won most of his 34 wins at Rosecroft Raceway. He won last week in the Open, had won two straight overall, and still manged a wire-to-wire win at 5-1. The son of Broadway Hall is owned by William De Lodivico and trained by Megan Tolson who had a conditioning double. Jonathan Roberts guided both Tolson winners, also scoring with Capital Builder.
