Pastor Stephen to headline Wellwood final

by Greg Gangle, WEG media

Campbellville, ON — Pastor Stephen is one horse who will headline the C$500,000 William Wellwood Memorial for 2-year-old trotters on Saturday (Sept. 18) at Mohawk.

The son of Cantab Hall won his elimination last Saturday for driver Yannick Gingras in 1:56. Pastor Stephen also was victorious in the $500,000 Peter Haughton Memorial on August 7 at the Meadowlands but was disqualified and placed sixth. The result has been appealed by trainer Jimmy Takter and owners John Fielding, Brittany Farms and Christina Tatker.

Pastor Stephen will enter Saturday’s race with $114,123 in earnings and will leave from post two.

Immediately following Pastor Stephen’s elimination victory last Saturday, WEG’s media department caught up with the Quebec born driver and he offers his thoughts coming into the final this Saturday. Gingras also comments on the outcome of the Peter Haughton Memorial where he was disqualified.

“I didn’t think it was the right call. I don’t think that changed the outcome of the race at all. It’s a horse race, my horse knuckled over, it’s like a horse that hits his knees. My horse took a bad step but he was never off-stride and I think he should of stayed as a winner,”
Gingras commented.
