Penzance Hanover repeats at Dover; top performers recognized

Dover, DE — Penzance Hanover recorded his second consecutive win against the top pacers in Delaware, posting a punishing 1:49.3 mile in Thursday’s (April 1) $20,000 Open Handicap Pace at Dover Downs.

Driver Art Stafford Jr. wasted no time with Penzance Hanover, launching the son of Somebeachsomewhere to the top while even-money choice JJ Flynn secured the pocket behind scorching early fractions of :26.2 and :54. The pressure began to mount on the backstretch when Itsrockandroll A — who was parked after leaving from his outside post — advanced first-over up the backstretch with Numbered Account following second-over. Despite the presence of outside challengers, Penzance Hanover maintained 1-1/2 lengths of clearance to three-quarters in 1:22.3.

Itsrockandroll A became leg weary at the top of the stretch, allowing JJ Flynn to take a clear shot at the leader in the stretch. However, JJ Flynn could not gain any ground, and Penzance Hanover won by a comfortable 1-1/4 lengths. JJ Flynn finished second; the tiring Itsrockandroll A held third, 3-3/4 lengths farther behind.

Stafford also owns and trains Penzance Hanover, who paid $11.00 to win.

Tim Tetrick and Joe Columbo took top driving and training honors, respectively, for the 2020-21 Dover Downs meet. Trotter Northern Express was recognized as the top horse of the meet.

The Delaware circuit shifts to Harrington Raceway, where the opening card is scheduled for next Monday (April 12). Post time is 4:30 p.m.
