Simcoe Hanover, 27, dies

Freehold, NJ — Simcoe Hanover, who retired to the place of his birth, Hanover Shoe Farms, in 1996, died of natural causes there on May 2.

The son of Albatross raced 143 times over eight years, with 28 wins and $783,374 in earnings to go with a mark of 1:54.4 taken as a 3-year-old at the Red Mile. Simcoe Hanover won the Sheppard Pace at 2, the James Dancer Stake and the Cane Pace as a 3-year-old, along with placing second or third in the Messenger, Confederation Cup, William Miller Memorial and Kentucky Pacing Derby.

He sired 202 foals between 1989 and 1996, while at stud in Ohio. Of those, 148 made the races for winnings of $2.7 million. He sired six 1:55 performers.

Simcoe Hanover moved to Hanover Shoe Farms in 1996 and was cared for by them until the time of his death. He served as a teaser for some years, until fully retiring. Simcoe Hanover was buried in the equine cemetery at Hanover, along with his sire, Albatross.
