Six wins in a row for Ranger at Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, ME — Bruce Ranger pieced together a remarkable performance on Thursday (July 18), as the veteran driver won six consecutive races at Scarborough Downs on the nine-race midweek card.

The fans sent Ranger to the gate as the post-time favorite in all nine of his appearances, but their faith in the Maine native did not begin paying dividends until the fourth race, as he guided Smart Balance to a gate-to-wire victory for trainer Nicole Hardy.

The juggernaut continued with a 1:57.2 score behind a headstrong Shrinkwrap, who gave Hardy her second training win of the day; the streaking Tricia Star and Plus One; Pop A Top Pop, who gave trainer Eric Davis one of two wins on the card; and concluded with 14-year-old veteran San Antony-O.

Ranger, who is in the midst of his first full season back at the races after coming out of retirement in October 2018, passed the 9,000 career win plateau just last month at Bangor Raceway and is third among Maine natives in career wins, trailing only Billy Parker Jr. (11,311) and Walter Case Jr. (11,049).

After his six wins on Thursday, Ranger is now in third place on the Scarborough Downs leaderboard with 37 seasonal scores, just two wins back of Kevin Switzer Jr. who resides in second place and 14 wins shy of Drew Campbell, who leads the driving colony at the Downs with 51 wins.

Live harness racing is featured three days a week at Scarborough Downs, with 4:30 p.m. (EDT) twilight cards slated for Thursdays and Saturdays, while Sunday matinees go to post at 1:30 p.m.
