Southwind Tesla tops Monday’s Tattersalls January Select Mixed Sale

East Rutherford, NJ — Five-year-old female trotter Southwind Tesla topped Monday’s (Jan. 21) Tattersalls January Select Mixed Sale at the Meadowlands Racetrack, selling for $152,000 to agent Mario Zuanetti’s Atlantic Trot Inc. on behalf of Hickory Lane Farm. The plan is to breed the mare to Tactical Landing, Zuanetti said.

Five-year-old male pacer Maroma Beach was next on the best-seller list, purchased for $140,000 by Adriano Sorella. Also going for six figures were male pacers Babes Dig Me, for $120,000 to Richard Banca; Captain Deo, $115,000 to William Hartt; Clouseau Hanover, $112,000 to Tom Pollack; and The Wayfaring Man, $100,000 to Allard Racing.

Southwind Tesla is a daughter of Chapter Seven out of Southwind Sauna. She won seven of 39 career races and earned $204,957 while competing for the stable of trainer Rene Dion. Her victories included divisions of the Casual Breeze and New York Sire Stakes. She is from the family of O’Brien Award-winner Federal Flex as well as stakes-winners Scully FBI and San Remo Kosmos.

“I like her, excellent pedigree,” Zuanetti said. “The cross is great, Chapter Seven, so I think she will have a great-looking foal.”

Maroma Beach is a son of Somebeachsomewhere out of Arts Diva. The gelding has won 11 of 42 career races and earned $151,769. His wins included a leg of the Graduate Series at Woodbine Mohawk Park last year. He was most recently trained by Ron Burke.

“There’s only so many good ones in the sale, right?” Sorella said. “Racehorses are hard to find right now, so you’ve got to spend the money.

“We buy a lot of babies and those are easy to buy, but every year you’ve got to support your stable and you’re going to need these types of horses.”

Sorella said Richard Moreau would train Maroma Beach.

“I aim to race at Mohawk and he’s a nice, big-sized horse,” Sorella said. “You kind of need a nice, big-sized horse to get around the track there. He’s been a nice horse, who was good in the Burke barn.

“I asked Richard ahead of time, I said, ‘Give me your three best horses at this sale’ and he gave me two. This was on the top of his list, so I said, ‘Alright.’ If we’re going to buy two horses and spend $60,000 on one and $70,000 on another, we may as well just get this one and whatever it costs, it costs.”

Babes Dig Me (Somebeachsomewhere-Western Babe) is a 4-year-old stallion. He has won five of 33 career races and earned $284,179. His victories include an elimination of the Messenger Stakes at age 3 and he was second in a division of the International Stallion Stakes at 2. Also at 3, he was third in the Art Rooney Pace and Cane Pace. He was trained by Tony Alagna.

Clouseau Hanover (Western Ideal-Clouding Over) is a 5-year-old gelding previously trained by Burke. He has won 13 of 69 career races and earned $128,698. The Wayfaring Man (Dragon Again-Armbro Wichita) is a 7-year-old gelding with 22 victories in 101 lifetime races and $414,165. He also was most recently trained by Burke.

All six of the top-sellers were consigned by Preferred Equine.

A total of 150 horses and stallion shares sold Monday for a gross of $4.39 million.
