Strong finish for Lexington Selected Yearling Sale
October 7, 2012,David Carr, USTA director of Information and Research
Lexington, KY — Despite both the temperature and bidding cooling off on Saturday for the concluding session of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, warm smiles appeared with the tally of the final numbers, showing an increase on average price of 5.1 percent over the 2011 average. For the entire sale, a total of 684 yearlings passed through the sales ring, selling for a gross of $24,224,000, an average price of $35,415. Saturday’s session, while posting the lowest average price among the five days this year, contributed to the overall success by surpassing last year’s final session by 11.3 percent. The 132 yearlings Saturday sold for an average price of $12,576.
Trotting colts grabbed most of the top spots, including the two leaders and four of the top five. The highest price of $65,000 belonged to Blocking The Way, by Yankee Glide out of the unraced mare Duchess Of Lindy. This is her first colt and some of the notable males in the family include Chapter Seven and Sir Taurus. Kentuckiana Farms, agent consigned the colt which was purchased by Preferred Equine Marketing Inc. as agent.
Il Sogno Dream seized the runner-up position, selling for $40,000 to trainer Christopher Beaver. By Cantab Hall, this is also the first colt out of this dam, the $200,000-winning Le Reve, although it is a couple of females, the incomparable Moni Maker and her champion mother Nan’s Catch, that command attention on that catalog page. Preferred Equine Marketing Inc. consigned the colt as agent for J.P DuBois’ Reve Avec Moi Dreamwithme.
Breeders are hoping that the strong showing by the Lexington Selected Sale continues, particularly at next month’s Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, the other major national sale in the U.S. There was concern about prices in advance of Lexington, particularly with price drops experienced by some smaller regional sales. The dire threat to racing in Ontario posed a challenge to the Lexington sale. It was the strength of the Ontario program that had led to the move of some important stallions to that province. This resulted in the doubling of the percentage of Ontario-sired yearlings in the Lexington Sale from last year, from 6.6 percent to 13.8. To make matters worse, there was a smaller but still sizable drop in the percentage of New York-sired foals, coming from one of the strongest breeding programs.
Despite these challenges, the Lexington sale tallied healthy increases. A pair of young sires, both former Horses of the Year, created plenty of excitement and helped mightily in boosting prices. Buyers were eagerly anticipating the arrival of the first crop of trotter Muscle Hill; his 28 yearlings in Lexington sold for an average price of $102,429. On the pacing side, the spectacular performance by the first crop by Somebeachsomewhere on the track has caused great demand for his next group of foals. The 25 yearlings selling this week in Lexington averaged $84,680.
