34-1 Etonnant upsets Face Time Bourbon in Paris

Paris, France — Etonnant not only upset hot favorite Face Time Bourbon in Sunday afternoon’s (Dec. 12) Prix du Bourbonnais at Vincennes, but he did so in stakes record fashion.

The Prix du Bourbonnais was expected to be a walk in the park for 1-10 favorite Face Time Bourbon and driver Eric Raffin. Heading into the stretch, it looked as if the champion would fulfill those expectations as he opened up by a couple of lengths. But 34-1 outsider Etonnant, driven by Anthony Barrier, finished strongly and caught Face Time Bourbon to win by a head in a mile rate of 1:54.4. Norwegian mare Rebella Matters was third.

The former stakes record was 1:56.2 (mile rate), held by Bird Parker.

Etonnant is trained by Richard Westerink, who also trained Etonnant’s sire, Timoko.

The Prix du Bourbonnais was the second qualification race for next month’s Prix d’Amérique.
