Karen Hering, 62, dies

Columbus, OH — Karen Jean Silvey Hering, 62, of Wagram, N.C., died at FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care in Pinehurst on Jan. 3, 2020.

Mrs. Hering was born Jan. 24, 1957, in Centralia, Ill., daughter of the late John Silvey and Alice Brasel Silvey of Salem, Ill.

Beginning in 1974, she was a horse groomer with Graham Oil and Stock Farm in Salem for several years. She married John W. Hering in 1985 in Chicago, where they owned and trained Standardbreds at John Hering Stables. Also during this time, she worked for Seigel Turf Company at various Chicago race tracks and was a board member of the Horsemen’s Benevolent Fund.

After retiring from the racing business, she and her husband relocated to Wagram, N.C., where she worked at BB&T Bank in Hamlet, N.C.

In her spare time, she enjoyed golfing and bowling. Her passions were reading and watching sports, especially her Chicago Cubs, and the Bulls of the 1990s Michael Jordan era. She also loved gardening and was a member of the Emma Scott Garden Club in Laurinburg.

She is survived by her husband, John Warren Hering; son, Scott (Emily) Holler; brother, John (Lisa) Silvey; sister, Michele Quick (Mark House); aunt, Susan Thompson; uncles, Terry Brase and Jerry (Joyce) Brasel; brother-in-laws, Robin (Lynette) Hering and Gene (Tucker) Hering; grandchildren, Reed Holler and Corinne Holler; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or The Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Services to celebrate her life will be conducted on Tuesday (Jan. 7) at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel in Laurinburg. The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. with services to follow at 3 p.m. Services entrusted to Richard Boles Funeral Service, Laurinburg, N.C.
