USTA issues embryo transfer information reminder

Columbus, ON — A new year means the start of another breeding season is upon us. If you are considering performing an embryo transfer for your broodmare please note the protocol below to avoid penalty.

1. Before performing an embryo transfer, you must submit the application to perform embryo transfer along with the non-refundable $25 fee. It must be approved by the USTA Director of Registry prior to a transfer being made.

2. Once your application is approved, the mare may be bred and the subsequent embryo transferred. A certificate of embryo transfer must be submitted within 35 days of the transfer. If the transfer did not occur or the recipient mare was deemed not in foal, the form still needs completed and the reason must be provided. You can then indicate if an additional flush will be attempted, which will require a new certificate of embryo transfer to be submitted.

For further clarification regarding the rules and restrictions of performing an embryo transfer, see Rule 26.23 in the USTA Rule Book. Further questions can be directed to USTA Member Services at 877.800.8782 or memberservices@ustrotting.com.
