Sam King wins GSY Series race at The Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ — After a long three-plus month break from racing, the GSY Series was back on Friday (July 3) at The Meadowlands andĀ featured nine amateur drivers and pacers going to post. This was the first week that spectators were allowed back to the mile oval and they were treated to some summer action.

Even after the long break, something that is often seen in an amateur race at The Meadowlands is several horses vying for the lead. This was the case again as Roy Marohn, driving Frankandjoanne, left hard from the gate and was not letting anyone get by him for the lead. He carved out a fast first quarter in :26.2 and left post time favorite Joe Pennacchio, aboard Sapphire City, hung on the outside for the entire mile.

The field entered the half and three-quarter pole the same way with several horses making moves three wide as the field entered the stretch. That is when Sam King, sitting behind In The Huddle, tipped off cover and gained the lead in the deep stretch en route to his three-quarter length victory. Also closing from far back was another new face to the GSY Series, Melissa Arbia, driving Take It Back Terry, who ended up second. Hanging on for third was Iowa Neightive, with Tyler Miller in the sulky. The mile was timed in 1:52.2.

In The Huddle is an 8-year-old gelding by American Ideal, trained by Amanda Kelley and owned by Bigshow Racing Stable.

The GSY Series will continue its summer racing at the Big M next Friday night with the first post scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
