BFRC awards three scholarships for 2020

Washington Court House, OH — The Buckeye Fair Racing Consortium is awarding scholarships for 2020 to three exceptional students involved in harness racing for the 2020-21 school year.

The BFRC scholarship is a product of the bonus fair system implemented in 2016 by the Home Talent Colt Circuit, the Ohio Colt Racing Association and the Southern Valley Colt Circuit. A total of $5 of each bonus fair selected by nominators goes toward the scholarship fund each year.

For 2020 the total amount to be awarded was $4,425 with applicants having a horse that they or their parents train or own which has been staked across the board in one of the participating circuits. The student must be attending a college, university or trade school and also be active in harness racing in Ohio at the county fair level within the host circuits.

The 2020 scholarship recipients who will share equally from the total are Conley Newberry, Kaitie Hartman and Aubrey Schwartz. The BFRC scholarship committee would like to extend a special thanks to Ann Lukfin, famed equine artist, and her husband, Ray, for leading the selection committee and taking great care while reviewing several applications.

Conley Newberry will be attending Sinclair Community College this fall studying mechanical engineering. He is also an up and coming young driver at many of the county fairs in Ohio. He is the son of Kelly and Matthew Newberry of Beavercreek, Ohio.

Kaitie Hartman attends Ohio University where she studies music education with a choral emphasis. She can be found at many of the Ohio county fairs helping her parents, Rick and Tami Hartman, with their string of harness horses. The Hartman Stable is based out of Circleville, Ohio.

Aubrey Schwartz will be attending Wilmington College this fall studying agriculture and education. She is the daughter of Bret and Robin Schwartz and is frequently helping at the stable based at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in Washington Court House where her father trains.

Best of luck to all of the 2020 Buckeye Fair Racing Consortium scholarship recipients, with their Standardbreds and their studies.
