Scirocco Rob overcomes tough trip at Harrah’s Philadelphia

Chester, PA — After being left in the shadows of a 1:52 performance from Arabella’s Cadet last week, Scirocco Rob made two moves en route to a 1:53.1 victory in the $14,400 top-level trot on an overcast Thursday (Sept. 17) at Harrah’s Philadelphia.

Leaving from post six in a field of seven, Scirocco Rob tucked in third early as Mississippi Storm strung favorite Southwind Avenger out through most of a :26.3 quarter. Southwind Avenger got a breather to the :56 half, but Scirocco Rob was out and rolling up the backstretch for driver George Napolitano Jr., going right at the leader to three-quarters in 1:24.2 three-quarters and making the lead at head-stretch.

Scirocco Rob kept to his task to the finish line, winning by a half length over Mississippi Storm, while second-over Goes Down Smooth finished third ahead of a tiring Southwind Avenger. Scirocco Rob, a 5-year-old Explosive Matter gelding, has now won three of his last four starts for trainer Mark Silva and owners Kathleen and Lewis Whitaker Jr.

In the $13,600 co-featured trot, Grapple Hanover yielded control to favorite MacMorris Hanover before rallying up the inside to gain a half-length victory over Hatikvah — who outlasted a first-over grind through the final half — in 1:55.2. David Miller drove the Andover Hall gelding for trainer Bucky Angle and owners Howard and Josh Kauffman.

George Napolitano Jr. won four races on the card for Thursday honors; Dexter Dunn recorded three victories.
