Big finish for Baldaquin in Pocono trot

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Baldaquin rallied from far back to win his second straight race and took a mark of 1:55 in Tuesday’s (Aug. 10) $15,300 trotting co-feature at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono.

The 5-year-old Explosive Matter gelding was far off hot fractions of :26.3 and :55.3 contested by Gerard and SVF Blushingbride, but then got in gear going down the backstretch for driver Tyler Buter following the cover of Caviart Emma passing the 1:25 three-quarters. Caviart Emma worked to the lead, but was ripe to be passed by Baldaquin, who won by 1-1/2 lengths over Worthy Of Honor, who rallied late. Caviart Emma finished third.

The lightly-raced Baldaquin has seven wins in 16 career starts for trainer Louise Pepin and owner Steven Bryden.

In the $15,300 pacing headliner, Im A Gigolo N brushed to the lead just past the half before coming home in :53.4 to hold off a determined bid from favored Belmont Major N by a length. The Sweet Lou gelding took a new mark of 1:50 for trainer Ron Burke and the partnership of the Burke Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Lawrence Karr and Phil Collura.

Racing resumes at The Downs on Saturday (Aug. 14), with 3-year-old pacing fillies contesting their final Pennsylvania Sire Stakes preliminary event before their Sept. 4 final. Program pages will be available via the PHHA website.
