Can’t Beach That scores narrow win in Open Handicap at Rosecroft

Ft. Washington, MD — Trae Porter and Can’t Beach That ($9.80) won a sensational stretch battle with four rivals on Sunday night (Feb. 27) to win the $12,000 Open Handicap at Rosecroft Raceway.

Driver John Wagner cut the mile and entered the stretch with the lead with Derby Dog Hanover. As fractions of :26.3, :55.2, and 1:23.1 caught up with him in deep stretch, Starship who pressured first over got by. Yet his bid was foiled by Can’t Beach That on his outside and Precision Bluechip who ducked in the passing lane, as Can’t Beach That won by a quarter-length in 1:52.2.

It was the third win of the year for the son of Somebeachsomewhere, owned by Surprise Pic LLC and trained by Michael Hall.

It was the first of two wins for Porter who took the next race with Transparency ($6.40) who went by a stubborn pacesetting Rocktavius in 1:51.4. Transparency is owned by breeder Tom Cooke and trained by Roger Hans.

Russell Foster had five wins on the card, Jonathan Roberts two and 23-year old Matthew Athearn swept the early double with two nice payouts, Rock On The Hill ($20.00) and Scrappy Sam ($45.00). Hall had a training double.
