Spring Maryland Sires Stakes champions crowned at Rosecroft

Ft. Washington, MD — Drawing an outside post is never easy in harness racing. For Connies All In Wednesday night (May 18) at Rosecroft, it was even tougher as the outside half of the gate was some five lengths off at the start.

The daughter of Rusty’s All In showed her dominance though, as recovering from the head start given to the rest of the field, she completed the journey in 1:55.1 to secure her first Maryland Sires Stakes Championship for driver Jared Moyer and trainer John Wagner.

While her stablemate Lloyds Ladys battled 50-1 shot Maleficent K through the first half-mile, Moyer, poised at the ready, followed second choice Baby Doll Jen into the outer flow just before the half. Both went three-wide around stalling horses and in the final quarter, Connies All In left all foes behind for an eight length win. Baby Doll Jen was second and Camon Ban was third.

Pamela Wagner bred and owns the winner out of the Artsplace mare Odds On Riesling, who has thrown multiple stakes winners. It was the first of two stakes wins on the night for the Wagners and puts Connies All In at four-for-four in 2022.

In the second $75,000 Sires Stakes on the card, Anthonys All In cruised to a 6-1/2 length win in a lifetime best 1:53.2. Wagner eased the winner to the lead at the five-eighths mark and never looked back. The son of Rusty’s All In is now three-for-three on the year, 9-for-13 lifetime, and has $160,660 in his bankroll. Rusty’s Rockin was second, Donnys All In was third.

In two non-betting races, Hoofbeats De Vie remained a perfect nine-for-nine in MDSS competition, easily winning the $75,000 male trot in 1:55.4 for the Joie De Vie Stable and trainer Christopher Lakata. Russell Foster was at the lines for the son of Charlie De Vie who has suffered defeat only once in his career. His earnings now sit at $132,540 in 10 starts. Bonjour Mary Ellen was second and Whitesville Mr AW was third.

Charlie’s Song and You’ll Never Be Me seem to be developing a nice rivalry in the filly trotting division. Last year, Charlie’s Song won two of six matchups in MDSS competition, but lost both finals.

Wednesday night, the daughter of Charlie De Vie powered out of the pocket in the stretch to win her first final for Roger Plante, who ended the night with three driving wins. Off the board only once in her career, Charlie’s Song has now earned $104,210 in 10 starts for trainer and co-owner Steve Leblanc, Count De Money Stable, William Lutz and breeder Glenn Dyke.

Jonathan Roberts was a bridesmaid in two $75,000 finals and then went to work, winning six races on the card. He won three for trainer Michael Hall. He has a one win lead on Russell Foster heading into Saturday night’s final card of the meet, while John Wagner has secured the training title.
