Race mishap unseats Wilder, Killeen; Blue Ivy wins Meadows distaff

Washington, PA — A mishap in Tuesday’s (Oct. 11) 10th race at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows unseated drivers Mike Wilder and Jack Killeen. The incident resulted in the judges declaring the race “no contest” for wagering purposes, although purse money was awarded per the usual formula.

Wilder was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Killeen walked off the track under his own power, but took off his remaining drives.

The accident occurred in the paddock turn past the half when Wilder’s horse, Cheddarontheside, broke stride and fell. Killeen could not avoid the fallen duo with his horse, Judge Joy Bean.

The two loose horses were gathered up but not before charging the wrong way up the stretch during the race. The judges ruled the race no contest because drivers could not contest the race with the loose horses coming at them.

In Tuesday’s feature, the $19,300 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace, Blue Ivy threw down a :27.3 third quarter, then rolled to her second straight victory — and fifth in her last six starts.

Blue Ivy rolled to her fifth victory in six starts in Tuesday’s top distaff pace, highlighting a grand slam for driver Aaron Merriman. Chris Gooden photo.

After Aaron Merriman gave Blue Ivy a :29 second-panel breather, the 6-year-old daughter of Captaintreacherous-All Blue encountered no serious challengers, defeating the pocket-sitting Rock It Out by a half length in 1:51.4. Slick Artist A completed the ticket.

Bill Bercury trains Blue Ivy, who lifted her career earnings to $676,730, for Renee Bercury. It was one of four wins for Merriman on the 13-race card.

Live racing at The Meadows continues Wednesday (Oct. 12), when a 12-race program features a pair of carryovers: $1,392.10 in the final-race Super Hi-5 and $153.50 in the Jackpot Pick-5 (races 4-8). First post is 12:45 p.m.
