by Kimberly Rinker, OSDF Administrator

Columbus, OH — Forty-two freshman trotting colts passed the Northfield Park entry box this week, necessitating five $40,000 divisions of Ohio Sires Stakes action on Monday (July 2).

Races one, three, four, five and seven have been programed as the OSS events, with a first race post time of 6 p.m. (EDT).

For a horse to be eligible to the Ohio Sires Stakes, the foal must have been sired by a stallion registered with the Ohio State Racing Commission during the year of conception.

Stallions with foals represented in these five OSS events include first crop sire Uncle Peter with eight; Manofmanymissions with seven; Dejarmbro with five; Wishing Stone with four; and Cash Hall with three. Break The Bank K, Broadway Hall, Dontyouforgetit and Triumphant Caviar are all represented by two foals each, while Amigo Hall, Cayenne Turbo, Ilooklikemymom, My MVP, Neely Dunn, Southwind Spirit and Winbak Yankee each have one foal competing in these events.

Standouts in the first division (race one) include Wittyville, a bay son by Manofmanymissions, out of the SJ’s Photo mare Witty Girl 3,1:58.2f ($32,602), a modest race mare herself, but one who has proven to be prolific in the breeding shed, having produced March Awareness (by Ken Warkentin 1:53 ($399,739); Witty’s Winner (by Jailhouse Jesse) 1:54.4s ($95,757); and Wittyville’s full brother, the 3-year-old standout Mission Accepted 3,1:52f ($268,300).

Owned by Burke Racing Stable, Knox Services (breeder) and Weaver Bruscemi, Wittyville qualified twice at The Meadows, on June 14 and 21, trotting his first in a winning 2:01.2 by nearly eight lengths over his rivals and narrowly missing another win in his second, clocked in 1:59.4 and beaten just a neck. Trained by Ron Burke, he’ll have Mike Wilder in the sulky from the rail.

Cravin For Cash heads up the second OSS division (race three). Trained and co-owned by Jeff Cox along with Michael Soehnlen, the gelded Dontyouforgetit youngster won a Northfield qualifier on June 7 by two lengths in 2:02.3, and followed that up by taking a $6,500 Northfield 2-year-old race on June 20 in 2:01.3. Greg Grismore was at the lines behind the youngster, who is out of the unraced Kadabra mare Cast A Spell, and returns to drive Cravin For Cash from post six. The bay gelding was bred by Urie Byler.

Canadian invaders, trainer Jason McGinnis and driver Anthony MacDonald, have paired up to bring a number of youngsters into the Ohio Sires Stakes program this year, including third division (race four) standout Oh So Pine, an Uncle Peter colt owned by Thestable Oh So Pine Group. This youngster qualified at Woodbine Mohawk Park in 1:59 with a second-place finish on June 15, then scored an impressive 1:58.1 victory in a $10,500 Woodbine Mohawk Park 2-year-old race on June 26, drawing away by nearly three lengths as the public’s favorite. Oh So Pine’s dam is the prolific Pine Potion, an unraced daughter of world champion Pine Chip, who has produced Oh So Pine’s half-siblings Bullet (by Windsong’s Legacy) 1:53.1s ($303,500) and At My Request (by Dejarmbro) 4,1:56.1h ($68,316), among others.

Cassius Lane, a bay son of Cash Hall conditioned by Ken Rucker, who owns the youngster in partnership with The Panhellenic Stable Corp., brings impressive genetic credentials into the fourth OSS division (race five). His dam is the unraced American Winner lass Winning Colors K, who has already produced Autumn Escapade (by Victory Sam) 3,1:55.1 ($895,492); Autumn Estelle (by Cayenne Turbo) 4,1:58.3 ($113,229); and Cash Lane (by Cash Hall) 2,1:56.2f ($74,083). Cassius Lane began his career with a third-place finish in a Hoosier Park qualifier on June 6, then stormed to a wire-to-wire, near 10 length, 1:59.3 triumph at that Indiana raceway on June 13. Trace Tetrick gets the nod once again, from post four.

Not to be overlooked in this same division is Dylan The Great, a Ron Burke-trainee who qualified impressively on June 14 at The Meadows, going gate-to-wire in 2:00.2 and besting his rivals by 13-1/4 lengths with Dave Palone at the lines. Bred by Midland Acres and owned by Burke Racing Stable, Larry Karr, J&T Silva-Purnel & Libby and Weaver Bruscemi, Dylan The Great is a son by Break The Bank K, out of the Conway Hall mare Montauk Point, and is a full brother to the 3-year-old Doc Mossies Legacy 3,1:57f ($28,859); with half-siblings in Summit City Flo (by Jailhouse Jessie) 3,1:55.2 ($225,258); Certain Potential (by Jailhouse Jesse) 1:55.1s ($119,270); and Master Montauk (by Master Lavec) 1:58f ($42,853).

Ilooklikeanallstar has been saddled with the eight-hole in the fifth and final OSS division (race seven) for driver Danny Noble and trainer Kimberly Dailey. Owned by Virginia Powell and bred by Andrew Kauffman, this bay altered son by Ilooklikemymom qualified impressively at Scioto Downs on June 18, clocked in 1:59.4 with a wire-to-wire, 10 length triumph with Noble in the bike. Ilooklikeanallstar is the second of three foals out of the Tagliabue mare Chanteuse 3,1:59.2h ($32,332), and is a half-brother to the Yankee Glide gelding Getitwithoutagun 2,2:00.1f ($28,817).

Cumberland Gap in this same division bears watching as well. The bay son of Wishing Stone won handily in 2:01.1 in a $6,500 Northfield 2-year-old race on June 27, after a pair of even qualifying efforts at Delaware on June 14 and 20. Owned and bred by Charles Stillings and conditioned by Rene Bauslaugh, Cumberland Gap is the fourth foal out of the Dream Vacation broodmare Battle Axe 2,2:00 ($13,169) and is a half-brother to Battle Mage (by Kadabra) 3,1:54.4 ($204,839) and Body Of Work (by ABC Garland) 4,1:54.4 ($121,542).

Call Me Thefireman is another son of Wishing Stone who qualified impressively with a 2:00.3, four length score at The Meadows on June 21 in rein to Chris Page. Conditioned by Ron Burke for Burke Racing, Weaver Bruscemi, J&T Silva-Purnel & Libby, the bay colt appears well-poised for a solid debut. Bred by Stephanie Smith-Rothaug, Call Me Thefireman is a half-brother to 2018 OSS winner Non Smoker (by My MVP) 3,1:54f ($76,601). Out of the Donerail mare Maple Grove Smoky 2,1:56.3 ($116,487), Call Me Thefireman also has half-siblings in Maple Grove Family (by Vaporize) 1:58.3s ($92,892); Goneinapuffofsmoke (by Psychic Spirit) 3,1:57.3h ($72,609) and Maple Grove Karen (by Psychic Spirit) 1:58.3f ($31,801). Page drives again from post nine.

Ohio Sires Stakes action continues Tuesday night (July 3) at Northfield Park, with events for 2-year-old trotting fillies, and Wednesday afternoon (July 4) at Scioto Downs, with 2-year-old pacing colt races.
