James “Jim” Murphy, 80, dies

Columbus, OH — James Clarence “Jim” Murphy, 80, of Crestwood, Ky., died Aug. 25, 2017.

He was born Aug. 16, 1937 in Mercer Co., Kentucky, to the late James Clemis and Dorothy King Murphy. He was a graduate of Lafayette High School and the University of Kentucky.

Mr. Murphy was a Standardbred breeder, driver and trainer and was a director of the Kentucky Harness Horsemen’s Association for many years.

He also founded Murphy Horse Products.

Mr. Murphy was a member of the K Club, Lafayette and UK marching bands and track teams. He earned a full track scholarship to UK.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christina; and daughter-in-law; Laura. He is survived by his spouse, Donna Howard Murphy; daughters, Jacqueline Cheryl Murphy, Jennifer Murphy Ballard and Ashley (Chris) Bailey; sons, James Clarence II and Preston Howard; grandchildren, Melissa, Allison, Jacob Ballard, Jay Ballard, Taylor Henry, Tate Bailey and Nolan Bailey; brother, Bobby (Harriet); and sister, Doris (Joe) Grant.
