Notice on foal registration papers

by Jessica Schroeder, USTA Outreach & Membership Enrichment Coordinator

Columbus, OH — As foal registrations are processed, we would like to remind foal owners that they will not receive the registration certificate until the foal has been properly freeze branded/lip tattooed and DNA has been collected and confirmed.

In addition, any foal that is registered as Unnamed will have their papers held electronically at the USTA until suitable name choices have been submitted (via mail, fax or e-mail). Likewise, if your submitted name choices at the time of registration are not approved, your foal will be registered as Unnamed with the papers held electronically. Transfers of ownership for Unnamed foals can be completed by using the application for transfer.

The following rule was approved in 2015 by the USTA Board of Directors concerning the hold of registration papers for DNA:

USTA Rule 26. (f)
In order for a foal to be registered the application for registration, the mating certificate and the fee for registration must be submitted to the USTA no later than December 31st of the foaling year. The foal may be registered after the December 31st deadline upon payment of the additional fee for late registration. Effective with foals of 2016, registration papers will not be issued until the foal is permanently identified and confirmation of parentage verification is received from the testing facility approved by this Association.

To schedule an appointment with the ID Tech in your area, click here for a listing of phone numbers and regions covered by each ID Tech. If all the proper paperwork is submitted and the foal just needs to be DNA tested and freeze branded, the foal is considered registered, and can be found via the free tattoo search by searching for the foal’s name or registration number. The foal will also be listed under the foal listing for dam and dam breeding report in Pathway.
