Lexington, KY — Veteran horseman Troy Boring, 54, died Jan. 8, 2017.

The son of Michigan Hall of Fame horseman Chris Boring, Mr. Boring was one of the Wolverine State’s leading drivers in the 1980s and ’90s. Mr. Boring drove 2,766 winners in his career, with $12,757,580 in purse earnings. His victory total included several Michigan Sires Stakes champions, including Noble Joshua, Sunrise Raider, Miss Wall Street and Precious Shopper.

Mr. Boring also drove on many occasions several stars in the barn of his father, including 1984 Little Brown Jug winner Colt Fortysix and world champion Albert Albert.

Besides working for his father, Mr. Boring also trained a small stable of his own through the years, with one of his best performers being So Right, whose $177,693 in earnings in 1996 included a third-place check in the $665,400 Sweetheart Pace final for 2-year-old filly pacers at the Meadowlands. So Right won five races that year, including the $46,000 Pink Bonnet final at Scioto Downs.

Mr. Boring’s best year as a driver came in 1989 when he drove 200 winners with $864,783 in purse earnings. In his last two years of full-time driving in 2010-11, Mr. Boring was among the leaders at Batavia Downs and Buffalo Raceway.

Mr. Boring is survived by his parents, Chris and Joyce; children, Dan Bukowski, Emily and Christopher; grandchildren, Evelynn, Christopher and Connor; a brother, Mike; sisters, Teresa Howell, Melissa Lintz, Amanda Jo Bates and Angela Loncki; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation for Mr. Boring will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 12) at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, 2959 N. Adrian Hwy., Adrian, MI 49221 (phone 517.265.2300), and from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday (Jan. 13), followed by memorial services.
