Town Temptress tops Dayton’s best mares

Dayton, OH — Town Temptress flirted with the best Open mares currently competing at Hollywood Dayton Raceway on Friday night (Nov. 4) before wearing them down to win the $15,000 featured event in 1:53.1.

Town Temptress sped to a 1:53.1 score in Hollywood Dayton Raceway’s $15,000 Mares Open on Friday.

Driver Peter Wrenn was unhurried with the eventual winner through the first quarter in :26.3, content to sit fifth along the pylons in the early going. When the pace came to a relative crawl during the second quarter, however, Wrenn decided to make a first-up move and was on the outside in fourth passing the :56.2 halfway station.

After advancing to second and lapped on to the front-running Bellatricks (Josh Sutton) at the 1:24.2 three-quarter marker, Town Temptress paced home in :28.4 to secure her third win on the season and second in seven tries against Dayton’s best distaffers. Bellatricks, the lone 3-year-old in the field, held for second with Brookletssuprsonic (Kyle Ater) picking up the show dough.

Dispatched at 7-2 odds, Town Temptress returned $9.40 to her mutuel supporters. The exacta kicked back $37.00.

With the victory, Gail and Robert Sanders’ Town Temptress eclipsed the $100,000 earnings plateau, raising her lifetime bankroll to $105,579. The 4-year-old daughter of Artiscape now boasts eight triumphs to couple with 14 place and six show finishes in just 44 career starts. She is conditioned by Steve Bauder.

Saratoga
Glenferrie Bronte N (Changeover) prevailed in just her second start in the Fillies and Mares Open on Friday night at Saratoga Casino Hotel. The Jose Godinez-trained mare was a non-factor in her local debut a few weeks ago but was aggressive in Friday’s feature as reinsman Bruce Aldrich Jr. moved her out to the early lead. Last week’s Open winner So Nice (Mark Beckwith) was relegated to a first over journey in the $16,000 feature and squared off for the better part of a half-mile with the front-running invader. It was Glenferrie Bronte N who drew clear turning for home before prevailing in 1:53.1. So Nice continued her impressive on the board streak as she was the runner-up while Bazooka Terror (Billy Dobson) came on to finish third. Glenferrie Bronte N returned $8.70 to win and led an exacta and triple that paid $19 and $81, respectively. The win time of 1:53.1 served as a new lifetime mark for the 5-year-old New Zealand-bred distaffer who moved her career earnings over the $100,000 mark with the win. Live racing continues on Saturday night at Saratoga with first post time set for 6:45 p.m.

Batavia
For the second time in four weeks, Dontch Remember ($3.80) defeated the best resident pacing mares on Friday night in the $10,000 distaff Open at Batavia Downs. Dontch Remember (Jim Morrill Jr.) got away third as Kaitlyn Akeeper (Kevin Cummings) and V’la Faire (Wade Tomaszewski) took the top two spots through the first turn. But not happy with that position, Morrill pulled before the quarter and took the top just after that station in :28. Positions remained unchanged until Who Says That (Shawn Gray) pulled first-over just past the three-eighths and started a slow grind up the outside. Making up ground with every stride, Who Says That got even with the leader at the three-quarters in 1:26.4, then eventually took the lead from Dontch Remember as they headed around the final turn. But just before they straightened out for the stretch drive, Dontch Remember regained her advantage and surged along the pylons. She held off a stubborn Who Says That and a late surging Kaitlyn Akeeper to win the race by a length in 1:55.3. It was the ninth win of the year for Dontch Remember and the winner’s share boosted her earnings to a career one-year high $53,805 for owner Mike Torcello. Gerry Sarama trains the winner. Jim Morrill Jr. padded his dash driving lead by winning four consecutive races on Friday’s card, bringing his total for the meet to 86. Shawn Gray got a driving hat trick and Ray Fisher Jr. scored a double. Trainers Mike Carrubba and Maria Rice each sent two winners to post. Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) with an early 3:30 p.m. post time for a special Breeders’ Cup day presentation.

Vernon
William Ballard’s Gimme The Cash ($3.40) held off all comers in Friday evening’s featured $6,700 trotting event at Vernon Downs, living up to odds-on billing. The 5-year-old Cash Hall mare sprinted to the fore early, clearing Count Speed (John MacDonald) with ease before controlling the terms through :27.1, :56.3 and 1:25.2 sectionals. Upon reaching head-stretch, Gimme The Cash responded to pressure from Count Speed up the pegs, but was also faced with a threat from the late-emerging My Lucky Word (Truman Gale) in the last yards. Ultimately, Gimme The Cash prevailed by a nose over My Lucky Word in 1:54.3, while Count Speed was a gamely chasing third. Angus MacDonald trains Gimme The Cash, who took her 13th career win and her third in four tries. For driver Chris Lems, the featured win kicked off a hat trick on the 13-race card only to be outdone by John MacDonald, who led all drivers with four victories on the night. Saturday (Nov. 5) evening’s closing night program features the annual “Turn Back the Clock Rewind Race” conducted clockwise at seven-eighths of a mile, as the eighth of 12 dashes carded. Horsemen and bettors alike should note a special 6 p.m. post time for the closing night card, with fireworks to follow.
