Tax tips for horse owners

Washington, DC — Horse lovers united, inc (hlu) a horse rescue serving the Delmarva peninsula will be embarking on a project to help several retired Standardbreds. We will be looking for 10 ex-racehorses and 10 trainers for this project. Trainers will be required to provide a facility that will meet hlu guidelines. Training methods must be gentle; example: John Lyons, Pirelli, etc., no beating on horse. Trainers must provide feed/supplements that meet the requirements of the individual horse. Hlu will be making efforts to get feed supplied by feed stores. Trainers must provide references of good character.

The following requirements apply to the horses: Standardbreds only, must be retired from racing, must be in need of a new home, between the ages of four and 16 years, no stallions, must be enrolled in Full Circle, coggins and vaccinations must have been done within past five months, shoes pulled and feet trimmed, must be evaluated by a veterinarian for soundness.

This challenge is open to horses and trainers on the Delmarva Peninsula. Tentative period for training will be three to four months. Horses must be retrained for pleasure riding, trail rides, pleasure driving, showing, or must show ability to provide therapy to humans. $1,500 in prize money will be awarded.

Horses will be judged at the end of the training period. Ground manners will also be judged. Hlu guidelines for adoption will apply. Trainers will have first option to adopt. Please contact Lorraine Truitt at 410-749-3599 (home) or e-mail <boxwood3684@comcast.net.
