Lexington, KY — The Lexington Selected Yearling Sale closed the books on its highly successful sale with the concluding fifth session on Saturday night, October 4 at the Fasig-Tipton Pavilion. For the full sale, a total of 647 yearlings passed through the sales ring, selling for an average price of $44,080. This is a 10.6 percent increase over the $39,857 in 2013 and the second highest average in Lexington Selected history, trailing only the $45,072 in 2007. The gross sale of $28,520,000 also surpassed the 2013 total by more than $1.1 million, despite 40 fewer yearlings being sold.
Saturday’s session offered 94 yearlings, which sold for an average price of $13,926. This was huge increase of 19.1 percent over the 2013 number for the comparable session.
The well-named Kapow landed a knockout blow to be the sale topper Saturday at $70,000. The Conway Hall colt is from Zing 3, 1:55.4. Pat Waldo, representing Richard Gutnick bought the colt from the Hunterton Sales Agency consignment, which was serving as agent for breeders Steve Stewart and Diane Giuliano.
Over the course of the five sessions, 65 yearlings sold for a price of at least $100,000, seven more than in the 2013 sale. At 10 percent of the entire catalog, this was the second highest rate of six-figure yearlings in the 10-year history of the Lexington Selected sale, trailing only the 11 percent in 2007.
As usual, trotting colts attracted the highest average prices, as they have done in eight of the 10 years of the Lexington Selected Sale. Their $48,884 average was more than $3,000 than any of the other three categories. There was a standings reversal for pacers, however. Fillies, usually the trailer, ranked second this year, at $45,762, while pacing colts were at the bottom in both average and median price.
The leading trotting sires waged a tight battle for the top of the leaderboard, with Muscle Hill (33 yearlings averaging $70,191) narrowly edging Credit Winner (33 at $70,182), closely followed by RC Royalty (1 at $70,000), Kadabra (19 at $67,737), and Cantab Hall (33 at $64,394).
It was no contest on the pacing side, as Somebeachsomewhere dominated, with his 30 yearlings averaging $89,167. He was followed by Sportswriter (12 at $58,750), The Panderosa (1 at $52,000), and Rock N Roll Heaven (11 at $50,545).
