Ms Avondale, 17, dies

by Robin Clements, for the California Harness Horsemen’s Assn.

Sacramento, CA — Ms Avondale, by Beach Towel out of the New Zealand mare Kiwi River N, had to be euthanized on Monday (Nov. 18).

A hard knocking invitational mare, Ms Avondale took a mark of 1:52.1 at Cal Expo, shattering the track record for 3-year-old fillies, a mark that still stands today.

Retired to the breeding shed, Ms Avondale proved her value as a broodmare, producing such prodginy as California Dream p,3,1.51.4 ($160,108), Jersey Dream p,3,1:52 ($110,427) and Dream Of New York p,3,1:52.2s ($61,199).

California Dream also broke the track record at Cal Expo as a 3-year-old, making Ms Avondale and California Dream the only mother/son combination to currently hold track records at Cal Expo.

Looking to follow in his siblings’ footsteps, Miracles Needed, a 3-year-old gelding, can be seen racing at the current Cal Expo meet.

Ms Avondale had a colt by Disco Devil at her side.
