Weldon Stockwell, 88, dies

Columbus, OH — Weldon Stockwell, 88, of Sunbury, Ohio, died Oct. 28, 2013 at Riverside Methodist Hospital.

He was born June 30, 1925, in Trenton Township to the late Clarence C. and Opal V. (Leak) Stockwell. A 1943 graduate of Sunbury High School, Mr. Stockwell served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He went on to marry the love of his life, Nancy (Beacom) Stockwell on Oct. 22, 1950, the ceremony performed in her parent’s home.

He was a former pastor in The Christian Union and was well known in the Standardbred industry due to his long tenure with the Christian Harness Horsemen’s Association.

The Christian Harness Horsemen’s Association was established in 1983 to serve Jesus Christ in harness racing. Mr. Stockwell led the organization as Executive Director for the first 27 years. On Jan. 1, 2011, he passed the reins to Chaplain Lee Alphen of Salem, N.H.

Mr. Stockwell is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Jim) Gorsuch; son, Mark (Cindy); grandchildren, Jennifer and Brody; and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, on Dec. 11, 2012.

Friends may call Friday (Nov. 1) from 4-7 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury. Graveside services will be held Saturday (Nov. 2) at 11 a.m. in the Trenton Cemetery with Pastor Bryan Grove officiating.
