Bee A Magician scorches to OSS record

by Sandra Snyder, for the Ontario Sire Stakes

Campbellville, ON — Bee A Magician cemented her reputation as the 3-year-old trotting filly to beat this season with an Ontario Sires Stakes record performance at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday (June 24).

In rein to Rick Zeron, Bee A Magician powered to a two length victory in 1:52.2, two-fifths of a second faster than the former provincial speed standard. The Kadabra daughter forced rival Angies Lucky Star into a bridesmaid’s role for the second straight start, and the two leaders were well out in front of third-place finisher Motown Muscle.

The other trotting filly Gold division went to Anaffairtoremember, who clocked in at 1:54.1.

Also battling in Gold Series action were the 3-year-old pacing colts and Scott Zeron landed two of his mounts in the winner’s circle. The young reinsman teamed up with Roar for the fastest leg, a 1:49.4 mile in the second division, and then made it a double with Mach It So, who hit the wire in 1:50.2.

Neither Roar nor Mach It So were fan favorites, but neither colt was as much of a surprise as Twin B Famous. Rated behind every other team in the first division, Twin B Famous and driver Jody Jamieson sprinted down the stretch to a half-length victory in 1:50.4.

The 3-year-old trotting fillies now journey to Grand River Raceway on July 3 for their second Gold leg, while the pacing colts head to Ottawa’s Rideau Carleton Raceway on July 28.

Freshman fever underway at Mohawk Thursday

Freshman fever begins at Mohawk Racetrack on Thursday (June 27) with six C$15,000 Grassroots divisions for the 2-year-old pacing colts.

Among the young hopefuls looking to earn a little Grassroots glory is a half-brother to former Ontario Sires Stakes standout Warrawee Needy. Hammered down to trainer Dave Menary for a Canadian Yearling Sale topping C$90,000 last fall, Warrawee Phoenix makes his career debut from post one in the second division.

Warrawee Phoenix is one of three colts Menary will harness. He will also send out Bringhome Theblue from post seven in the fourth race and King Royalty from post five in race nine.

Last season’s leading trainer Gregg McNair looks ready to defend his Johnston Cup title with a string of five freshman pacing colts ready to rumble around the Mohawk oval on Thursday. The trainer and his son — driver Doug McNair — will be aiming for the winner’s circle with Zorro from post two in race two, Crafty Master from post six in race three, Regal Babe from post five in race four, On The Big Swing from post four in race six and Three Of Clubs from post six in race eight.

Mohawk Racetrack’s first race gets underway at 7:25 p.m. on Thursday and the 2-year-old pacing colts will make their Ontario Sires Stakes debut in races two, three, four, six, eight and nine.
