Gene A. White, 77, dies

Columbus, OH — Gene A. White, 77, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2013.

Born in Buffalo, New York on February 23, 1936, he was the son of the late Evelyn and Le Roy (Babe) White. Gene attended Forestville Central Schools and joined the U.S Marine Corp. in 1953. He graduated from SUNY Brockport in 1960 with a Bachelors of Science in Health and Physical Education and later received his Masters in Administration from New York University. Gene was a Physical Education teacher/coach for both the Hewlett and Sewanhaka Central School Districts in Long Island. He relocated to Amsterdam, NY where he served as Athletic Director and Varsity Football Coach for the Amsterdam City School District. He later moved to Clifton Park and was the Athletic Director and Football Coach for South Colonie Schools. He then started White Maple Farm Racing Stable in Melrose, NY, spending several years as a trainer and owner at Saratoga Harness Raceway, working closely with his wife and children. In 2006, he retired to his summer home on Schroon Lake. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary Ann (Gillespie); his sister, Nancy Bertges of Coconut Creek, FL; his children, Tracey Norman (Michael) of Schaghticoke, Brian (Sarah Hopkins) of Saratoga, Daniel (Dianne) of Melrose, Gregory (Krissy Kelleher) of Johnsonville and Kathleen Allen (Brian) of Greenfield. Grandchildren include, Emily and Brett Norman, Lily White, Daniel, Amanda and Kevin White, Jacob and Emma White, Logan and Camryn Allen. Also survived by niece, Marcy, and nephew, Martin.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Transfiguration Parish in Schaghticoke. Interment with military honors at the Saratoga National Cemetery to follow. Calling hours at the Catricala Funeral Home, 1597 Route 9, Clifton Park, Monday, June 10, from 5-8 p.m. Special thanks to the staff of the Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center for their caring and compassion.
