Plainridge set for April 15 opening

by Jack Ginnetti

Marlborough, MA — The sound of hoof beats returns to Plainridge Raceway on April 15.

The state’s only harness track will race a three-day schedule through Nov. 30 with Saturday programs set for August, according to track officials. A 4 p.m. post time will be in place through August and the call to post changes to 1 p.m. after that.

The Blizzard of 2013 saw Plainridge remain open for simulcasting despite two to three feet of snow which struck the New England region last week.

The arrival of April 15 will mark the track’s 15th season which dates back to March 17, 1999. Track critics said it would never be built. It opened for business 17 months later.

Last year’s individual leaders were as follows: top drivers, Jim Hardy (134), Steven Nason (101) and Michael Eaton (91). Top trainers, Hardy (53), Eaton (45) and Donald Guidette, Jr. (31). Top owners, Michael Perpall (23), JJF’s Racing Stable Inc. (15) and Nancy Schechterle C/O Uplan (15).
