Catherine Burton, 88, dies

Columbus, OH — Catherine F. Burton, 88, died Jan. 16, 2013, in the Oneida (NY) Healthcare Center.

She was born May 2, 1924, in Vernon, N.Y., the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen (Heinig) Burton. She graduated Valedictorian of her class at Vernon High School and later graduated from Cornell University.

Prior to retirement she was employed with a manufacturer of sandpaper and abrasive materials in Troy, N.Y.

She enjoyed golfing and bowling and along with her family was at one time involved with the Burton Livestock Company of Vernon.

She was a longtime member of the United States Trotting Association, CNY Harness Horse Association and Saratoga Harness Horse Association and was a proud owner of Standardbreds. She enjoyed watching her horses race and enjoyed visiting them in the stable area at Vernon Downs.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Sondra Allen, Cinda Petersen, Thomas Sparling and Patrick Sparling.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday (Jan. 18) from 5-7 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home, 23 Front St., Vernon. Funeral services will be Saturday (Jan. 19) at 10 a.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home in Vernon. Private burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vernon, N.Y.
