Mapes scores a hat trick Sunday at Colonial Downs
New Kent, VA — Driver Joey Mapes scored a natural hat trick Sunday afternoon when he guided a horse in three straight races to the winners circle at Colonial Downs.
The streak started with a 4-year-old Metropolitan horse named What R U Doin, who came on strong in the turn and powered home in the stretch to a dominating 9-1/2 length win 1:53.2.
Katies Dreamboat was next but that victory did not come as easily. The 5-year-old pacing mare finished a neck better than CB Sammie Suit after that pair surged past front stepping Twenty Six Karma in mid-stretch. Mapes’ pacer crossed in 1:55.4, a new life mark.
The third win came aboard Miss Frog Biscuit, who rebounded from a sixth place defeat on Thursday to dominate by 6-1/2 lengths Sunday. The 8-year-old mare also set a new life mark of 1:56.2 and won for the fifth time this year.
Colonial doesn’t have a “Horse of the Week” award but if it did, Manley Brown’s Camifications would have won it hands down. The 8-year-old Camluck gelding scored a 1:51.2 winning mile on Wednesday, Colonial’s opening day, then came back with a 1:51.3 sizzler in Sunday’s featured race.
