Marlborough, MA — Greg Brewster left the ranks of the Marlborough Police Department a week ago, and is already spending his retirement time training harness horses.

The 58-year-old Marlborough native turned in his badge April 6 after 32 years on the force. “It was time,” he said when this writer caught up with him at Plainridge Racecourse.

Brewster has trained harness horses and been around the sport since he was a young man. He’s been a friend of Hall of Fame driver-trainer John Hogan and the Hogan family for years and helped with some of their chores at their Berlin Road homestead.

It’s been said timing is everything in life. If that’s so, Brewster is hopeful a trotter that was given to him will fare well in the upcoming Plainridge qualifiers. Brewster’s good fortune is Kansas City Spur who’s a 10-year-old.

“I’m hopeful he will qualify to race here,” the former police officer said. “Hogan is helping me train him.”

Brewster is a 1974 graduate of Marlborough High School and has been chairman of the Marlborough Retirement Board for 24 years. He’s also held a trainer’s license for 32 years.

Turning in his badge to train harness horses has Brewster pumped up. All he needs is some trips to the winner’s circle courtesy of Kansas City Spur.
