American Jewel suffers injury in Red Mile loss

Columbus, OH — Harnessracing.com is reporting that 2-year-old filly pacer American Jewel broke a P-1 bone in a sesamoid while competing in her International Stallion Stakes division this past Friday night at The Red Mile.
The previously unbeaten American Jewel finished second to Big McDeal, who equaled American Jewel’s world record of 1:50.2 for a freshman pacing fiilly on a mile track, in the $84,200 first division of the International Stallion Stakes.
Trainer Jimmy Takter told harnessracing.com that the filly was lame after the race and was taken to Rood & Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington on Saturday morning, where the injury was diagnosed. Dr. Larry Bramlage performed surgery on the filly on Sunday.
