Eight divisions held in NYSS Art Watson Pace

Yonkers, NY — The New York Sire Stakes stopped by Yonkers Raceway on Tuesday night (June 21), with the $238,032 Art Watson Pace for 3-year-old fillies. Eight divisions — including two early non-bettors — comprised the cotillion.

Some Girls Do was a 1:53 winner for driver Brian Sears.

Some Girls Do (Brian Sears) offered up a 1:53, down-the-road effort in the opening $29,529 group. The daughter of American Ideal, co-owned (as Burke Racing) by trainer Ron Burke, Frank Baldachino, Earl Smith and Weaver Bruscemi, is a snazzy 11-for-15 this season with earnings in excess of $216,000) Some Girls Do defeated New Album (George Brennan) by a length.

Southwind Jazmin (Jason Bartlett) edged away from a stubborn Alexachase (Jordan Stratton) by a half-length in the second $29,529 off-the-card event (1:55.1) for a third consecutive sire stakes win and fourth win in six ’11 tries overall. Mark Harder trained the Art Major lass for owner Rick Phillips.

The first wagering Watson (third overall, purse $29,529) was won by Arlington Ave (Kim Crawford, $4.40), lasting on the lead (life-best 1:55.3) as the 6-5 choice The daughter of Riverboat King, 3-for-7 this season, was trained by Maureen Salino for co-owners De Ca Sa Stable, William Salmeri, George Berkner and Arthur Lucarelli.

“We’ve been racing her from behind in most of her starts, but she drew the inside here and I thought this was a field she could go with,” Crawford said. “Besides, if I didn’t win, the owners weren’t going to give me a ride back home.”

The fourth $29,529 foray (second on the betting card) saw Eve Marie Seelster (Bartlett, $14) prevail up the passing lane in a life-best 1:54.4. She was able to get the better of both City Delight and Haze’s Zure Bet by a head and neck, respectively. The Artiscape filly, trained by Mike Hall, is co-owned by Allen and Ira Kaplan and David Sheib.

JK Owhatanite (Bartlett), last seen here winning the $197,634 Lismore Pace, won the evening’s final $30,129 NYSS group, easily neutralizing both the eight hole and her seven inside rivals. The daughter of Bettor’s Delight threw out a 1:53.4.effort, defeating Lightning Maddy (Brennan) by 3-3/4 wrapped-up lengths. Linda Toscano trained the 3 Brothers Stables homebred, who’s now 4-for-5 this season.

“She was as good tonight as she was in the (Lismore),” Bartlett said. “She’s very talented and just does her job.”

New York Sire Stakes action continues Friday night (June 24), with the $237,990 Hugh Grant Pace for 3-year-old colts and geldings in five consecutive divisions.
