Fields set for 52nd edition of Lady Suffolk at Freehold

from Freehold Raceway

Freehold, NJ — The 52nd edition of the Lady Suffolk goes in two divisions at Freehold on Friday (May 6). The sixth and eighth races each carry a $39,825 purse and both divisions feature six horse fields.

In the first division, Jeff Gregory goes from the rail for John Stark, Jr. with Imageofasweetday, a winner of $94,963 lifetime and a finalist in the New York Sires Stakes at Yonkers last fall. Right alongside will be Cat Manzi and Refuse To Lose for trainer George Teague, Jr. She’s got over $96,000 on her card lifetime and competed with Canada’s best freshmen fillies a year back in the Peaceful Way and the Champlain. Veteran Charlie Norris trains and drives Pacific Splash.

In the second split, Jeff Gregory again starts from the fence, this time with Dance Steps, once again for John Stark, Jr. Jason Bartlett is in town to give it a go with Linda Toscano’s Don’t Cry Lindy. Post four will be Trond Smedshammer’s Katie Done Did It, Cat Manzi will handle Balmy Breeze from post five, and Jim Pantaleano starts from post six with Sheer Wide for Jim Campbell, a Hambletonian Oaks winning trainer.

The Lady Suffolk, which began in 1960, goes in divisions for the 10th straight season. In 29 of the 51 prior years it has been split into at least two divisions. 2011 marks the 20th straight year the race will be contested at Freehold. Such notables as Delmonica Hanover (1972), Grades Singing (1985) and JEFs Spice (1986) have won this race in the past.
