Billy Hobbs, 75, dies

Columbus, OH — Billy Toy Hobbs, 75, died Nov. 17, 2010, at his home following an illness.

Born Nov. 25, 1934, in Wayland, Ky., he was the son of Clifford Hobbs and Lola Meadows Hobbs and served his country in the United States Navy.

Mr. Hobbs was an owner, trainer and driver of Standardbreds. He owned a good current racehorse, Proud Yankee, who won 11 of 18 starts this year. He also owned Lumbering Mel, a foal of 1979, who was an Ohio Sire Stakes champion in both 1983 and 1984. The son of Melvin’s Woe recorded 27 lifetime wins and earnings of $315,981.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Mullen Hobbs; and two sisters, Henry Lou Collins and Connie Sue (Byron) Houchins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leland and Carter; and sister, Ruby Jean.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Hardwick Memorial Chapel in Loris, S.C. Pastor Carroll Stephens will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.
