Longshots prevail on Thursday card at Dover Downs

Dover, DE — Odds On Demi-queue was anything but a favorite at 20-1 odds and despite drawing post 8 stormed home in 1:56 to win the $14,500 3,4 & 5-year-old pace Thursday, Nov. 4 feature race over a rain soaked track at Dover Downs.

With George Dennis in the bike, the 4-year-old Jenna’s Beach Boy-Odds On Steinam gelding chalked up his second win of the campaign for owners Z Tam Stables LLC and trainer Dave McCaffrey. Elijah Hanover (Jim Morand) led for most of the mile before yielding to Odds On Demi-queue rolling down the passing lane. Total Shark (Jon Roberts) finished third.

Cal-Expo
Open handicap trotters, racing for a purse of $5,200, were featured at Cal-Expo on a summer like Thursday night, in which Rompaway Brandon gamely won his fourth in the last five. Coming away third from his assigned post one in the field of five for trainer Tim Maier, the pair were content to sit through first half fractions of :28.2 and :58. Chased after and first-over past the five-eighths-mile pole, Maier had his gelding moving nicely to the three-quarters (1:27), but with the 4-5 favorite Claudius Augustus (Lemoyne Svendsen) right on his back. Quickly trotting into a head advantage with just under 3-16ths of a mile to go, the 4-year-old maintained that lead at the seven-eighths-mile marker, but couldn’t put any distance between himself and a three-wide and closing Claudius Augustus. Gamely holding on under mostly hand urging, Rompaway Brandon won ($8.00) by a head in 1:56, equaling a lifetime best. Claudius Augustus had to settle for second off a layoff since September 7, and Meringue (Scott Cisco) closed nicely to be just a head back in third.
