Springboard springs to victory in Meadows trot

Washington, PA — Springboard sprang to the lead with a quarter-pole move, enjoyed a second panel breather and went on to a comfortable victory in Thursday’s $22,500 Preferred Trot at The Meadows.

After Springboard took the point, Mike Wilder was able to give the 6-year-old SJ’s Photo-Spring Serenade gelding a leisurely second quarter in :30.1. From there, Springboard blazed the back half in :57 and scored in 1:55.4. Chips And Wings, rebounding from a pair of off-the-board efforts, was a rallying second, a length back, with Big Star Chuck third.

Miles Wollam trains Springboard, who extended his career bankroll to $271,381, and owns with Patricia Wollam.

Greg Grismore drove four winners and Dave Palone three on the 15-race card.

Cal-Expo
Claiming handicap pacers were featured at Cal-Expo in two divisions on Thursday night. Reeling in Grandpa Stevie in deep stretch, Schemes (Steve Wiseman) won the opener ($23.00) by a half-length. Owned by Gilbert Herrera and trained by Earl Kennedy, the 8-year-old gelding stopped the timer at 1:55.1, a seasonal best and his 25th career triumph. Grandpa Stevie tried hard while second and Leadmeastray finished another 2-1/4 lengths farther back in third. In the second division, Hanover D G (James Kennedy) made every pole a winning one off well rated fractions of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:28. Holding on to win ($4.60) by a neck, the Brian Solden leased and trained 9-year-old scored in 1:55.2, thus recording his 31st career victory while also pushing his earnings over $100,000. Whitman finished in second and Dugout Andee finished 2-3/4 lengths farther back in third.
