Sacramento, CA — The second half of the TVG Amateur Driving Series begins on Saturday (Sept. 11) at Cal-Expo in Sacramento.

This past May, two legs (multiple divisions) and a final were contested for $4,000 claimers. After five races, the standings show Sue Boyce leading Rick Bertrand by a small point margin. Together, they are well in front of, but still in range of, Robert Stepien and David Siegel.

A total of 15 horses (two divisions) entered the event, which is comprised of two legs and a final. The estimated purse of the final for these $2,500 claimers is over $8,000.

TVG has been a strong supporter of amateur racing in California since such events were resurrected about five years ago. Avid amateur driver, California Horsemen’s Association President and Hollywood Producer Alan Kirschenbaum continues to believe in amateur driving as a promotional vehicle and ownership attraction for Standardbred racing.

“Amateur racing remains unique to harness racing,” said Kirschenbaum, “and the more often it is presented, the more likely it is that owners, fans, and even gamblers will get the itch to join in the fun. We even have a former female jockey racing in our upcoming series which underscores the cross-sectional appeal harness racing has to potential amateur drivers.”

Track GM Dave Elliot echoed Kirschenbaum’s comments.

“We enjoy the variety that amateur racing brings to our program and are pleased that the horsemen and fans feel the same way,” Elliot said.
