Freehold, NJ — There is no timetable for a return to action, but Aaron Merriman is feeling better as he recovers from injuries that occurred in a June 11 accident at The Meadows in Pennsylvania. Merriman, who was harness racing’s winningest driver at the time, suffered a broken left elbow and broke both wrists.

Aaron Merriman is making progress in his recovery from a June 11 racing accident.

“I’m feeling a lot better,” Merriman said Wednesday. “Everything is ahead of schedule, from what (the doctors) told me, but they don’t give me any timetables. It’s a long road. I’m doing what I have to do, and then some, with the stretching and trying to get some flexibility back. They’re really, really happy, which makes me happy.”

Merriman, 32, had 355 wins at the time of the accident and was the leading driver at Northfield Park in Ohio. Last year, he finished third for most wins in North America, with a career-high 706. He also set a career mark with $5 million in purses.

“I’m bored out of my mind, that’s for sure,” Merriman said with a laugh. “I can’t really do much. I do some walking, and stuff like that. I can’t get too sweaty because I still have a cast on my right wrist. It’s due to come off Monday. I’m really limited. I’m just going to listen to the doctors, and I know it’s going to take a little while (to heal).”
