Cuz She Can defeats Southwind Tempo in Chester feature

Chester, PA
— Twice a winner already this season against the top mares to visit Harrah’s Chester Casino and Racetrack, Cuz She Can ($11.00) beat the toughest local field yet assembled in 2010, holding off two-time Betsy Ross winner Southwind Tempo in a 1:50.2 triumph.

Cuz She Can beat the toughest local field yet assembled in 2010, holding off two-time Betsy Ross winner Southwind Tempo in a 1:50.2 triumph.

The 5-year-old Cambest mare sat just off pacesetters Fleur de Lil (Aus) and Fox Valley Topaz through a :27 first quarter before Yannick Gingras moved her to the front (Tim Tetrick, Cuz She Can’s regular driver, had taken the mount on Southwind Tempo). Taking control before reaching race’s midpoint in :55, Cuz She Can stayed out of range of the first-over Flirtiscape, who failed to even pass the pocket-sitting Fleur de Lil at any point on the backstretch.

Sprinting away up the backstretch to a 1:22.3 third quarter split, Cuz She Can was five lengths clear of her greatest threat, prohibitive 3-5 favorite Southwind Tempo. With Flirtiscape at the apex of her bid on the far turn, Tim Tetrick angled Southwind Tempo three-wide off cover, but could only muster runner-up honors behind Cuz She Can, who prevailed by two lengths. Fox Valley Topaz and David Miller showed a mild rally up the open stretch to claim third.

Scioto Downs
Driver Chris Page showed why he was the leading driver at Scioto Downs last year as he took four trips to the winner’s circle on Thursday night. The native of Mt. Vernon, Ohio won with Forever A Cowgirl for trainer Steve Carter and owner Dorothy Miller by swinging her three wide on the final turn to overtake the leaders in the stretch. At the wire, she had a 1-1/2 length lead on her rivals in the 1:57 mile. Page also scored with Pte’s Desire, a sophomore son of Real Desire, for trainer Carter and owner Chuck Grubbs. He took the lead in the opening half and won comfortably in 1:58. Page’s other wins came behind the pacing females Bunnysexpresslane in 1:58.2 and Must Be The Best in 1:59.1. The father-and-son team of Chip Noble and Dan Noble both scored driving doubles on Thursday night. The younger Noble is leading all Scioto drivers in wins thus far in the 2010 season.

Cal-Expo
In a very rare appearance on the front, Cycle Power showed his versatility. Conditioned-claiming pacers were featured at Cal-Expo on Thursday night, in which Cycle Power repeated. Getting the lead just past the quarter-mile pole, timed in :29.4, the 4-year-old reached the half-mile juncture in :59.2.
Continuing to be chased after through a three-quarters, timed in 1:28.2, the gelding opened up in the upper-stretch under pretty strong urging, then when looking home free, Wiseman didn’t urge as strongly. From nowhere, however, came a charging Thedeadliestcatch (Jim Lackey). Holding safe as the wire came up, the Nathalie Tremblay owned and trained pacer, in winning his fourth in the last five outings, won ($3.60) by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:55.3. Thedeadliestcatch belatedly came on while roaring with pace to finish in second and Got No Troubles (John Chappell) finished another 1-3/4 lengths farther back in third.
