Apache Dame was a 1:53 winner in the Mares Open Handicap Pace.

Ross Wolfenden pulled Apache Dame to the outside in front of the grandstand and continued to move up to finally challenge last week’s feature race winner Boots Place (Mike Cole) at the three-quarters. The Apaches Fame-Amerissa 9-year-old then took over and opened up entering the stretch.

Apache Dame was an easy winner in 1:53, chalking up her fourth win of the year for Paul McDougall and WJ McDougall Racing Inc. The Peter Tritton trainee has now banked $75,230 in 2010. Shady Sabrina closed strongly for Tim Tetrick to finish second. Perfect M Forever took third for Brad Hanners.

Tug River Aussie, driven by Jim Morand, scored her third consecutive victory by stepping up to the $20,000 Fillies and Mares Pace to notch a 1:53 victory. The win, with the Cambest-Awestralian 6-year-old owned by Mike and Ann Tait, was Morand’s third of the day. Kellytuck Sophie (Jon Roberts) came on to edge early leader Chloes Silver Star (Ron Pierce) for second.

Double Dribble bounces inside for Meadows series victory

Washington, PA — Double Dribble did a double take at the top of the lane, didn’t like what he saw outside and bounced into the Lightning Lane to capture a division of the Wheel Of Fortune on Tuesday at The Meadows. Foolish Attempt also used a late brush to take the other $15,000 second leg split of the series for 3- and 4-year-old pacing colts and geldings.

Double Dribble was 2-1/2 lengths behind the dueling leaders, Billante’s Dream and I Like It Hot, when Aaron Merriman guided him to the outside for the stretch drive. In an instant, though, the 3-2 favorite dived inside and found that route to his liking, drawing off to down Billante’s Dream by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:54.4 over a sloppy track. I Like It Hot was third.

Norm Parker trains Double Dribble, a 4-year-old Allamerican Ingot-Lills Dream gelding, for Mike Foote.

Foolish Attempt saved ground on the tiring surface, a trip that left him four lengths in arrears around the final turn. He unleashed an impressive brush for Brett Miller that carried him to a nose victory over the first-up Expensive Toy in 1:56, with Up Front Mustang third.

Jim Rothfuss trains and owns Foolish Attempt, a 4-year-old I Am A Fool-Keystone Musical gelding who notched his second consecutive Wheel Of Fortune triumph.

Miller drove six winners on the 13-race card, including the 5,000th of his career with Sure Duffy in the sixth race, while Merriman fashioned a triple.

Speed is the name of the game at Monticello

Monticello, NY — Speed was the order of the day at Monticello Raceway on Tuesday afternoon, when 12 of the 13 races were timed in 1:59.4 or faster with 1:56.4 clockings turned in by both Bluehill Cami and DJ Wonder. And adding to the festivities of the day the very talented Jason Bartlett scored three winners on the card.

Former two-time Monticello driving champion Stephane Bouchard made his inaugural 2010 appearance here and guided Bluehill Cami to a gate-to-wire, two length triumph in 1:56.4. Not to be outdone, the meet’s leading driver Bruce Aldrich, Jr. reined DJ Wonder to his second consecutive victory, matching Bluehill Cami’s 1:56.4 clocking. The former is owned by Bouchard and John Tourloukis while Libertino Arrigo pays the bills on the latter.

Jason Bartlett mad his second consecutive Mighty M appearance and piloted three winners on the card. He scored behind Ronald Sabatini’s Jade Stone in 1:59.1 and won in 1:57.3 with the good looking 4-year-old pacer Rescue Plan. Bartlett made it three wins in-a-row when he guided Ala Cart Bill home first in a time of 1:58.2. The latter two winners are owned by Bulletproof Enterprises.

Even former Little Brown Jug heat winner Cactus Creek, now the property of Reginald Duguay, rambled to an easy four length triumph in 1:57.3 for Jimmy Marohn, Jr., which was one of three wins on the card for young Marohn. He also scored behind Blue Demon Racing Stable’s Rainin Fire in 1:59.3 and with Ed and David Reich and Mike Bilotti’s Color Library in 2:00.2.

Also of note was that Greg Merton won another race and now has 2,989 as he moved ever closer to 3,000 career wins and Jordan Stratton returned to his home track and drove two winners.

The fans must have liked the afternoon’s performances since they poured over $732,000 through the mutuel machines both on and off track.
