‘Rock Solid’ second session in Lexington Selected Sale
October 9, 2009,by David Carr
Lexington, KY — The Lexington Selected Yearling Sale had a ‘Rock Solid’ second session on Thursday night (Oct. 8).
Rock Solid, a colt by the leading money-winning sire of 2-year-olds, Rocknroll Hanover, was the sale leader on Thursday, going for $225,000. Myron Bell, agent on behalf of John Fodera, evidently found the colt to be rock solid in conformation and pedigree. Cameo Hills Farm bred and consigned this son of Sweet On Art, a sister to Northern Luck and V P Finance.
A pair of Glidemaster fillies grabbed the second and third spots on the leaderboard. Future Talent, a daughter of Diminutive, went to Covenant Standardbreds for $145,000 from the Hunterton Sales Agency consignment. Ruby De Vie commanded a winning bid of $140,000 from Tony Lindquist of Sweden. Preferred Equine Marketing consigned this filly out of Dream Angel.
These two young sires, Rocknroll Hanover and Glidemaster, Horses of the Year in 2005 and 2006, respectively, battled each other for supremacy on Thursday night. Each had three yearlings sell for at least $100,000; no other sire had more than one.
A total of 143 yearlings walked through the ring on Thursday, selling for an average of $52,878. The sale continues to track the path of last year’s auction. Prices in the first session declined 13 percent compared to the same session in 2008. Through two sessions, the sale remains at a dip of 13 percent.
Pacing colts are leading the way, both in terms of average price and in comparison with last year, actually showing an increase in 2009. It is the trotters that have gone offstride in prices thus far this year.
The Lexington Selected Sale continues through Sunday.
