NYSS freshman trotting fillies head to Monticello

by John Manzi, publicity director, Monticello Raceway

Monticello, NY — Some fine looking freshman trotting fillies will battle in four divisions of New York Sires Stakes at Monticello Raceway on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 16, with more than $146,000 in the offing.

One division will go as a non-wagering event prior to the betting card at 12:40 p.m. while the other three will be races one, four and five on the 13-race card.

Russell Williams’ Madam Hooch and Peter Arrigenna’s Tuesdays With Mom are arguably the most impressive of the lot, though there are a host of others that also are classy.

Madam Hooch, a Credit Winner-Pigwidgeon filly trained by Freddie Grant, has five wins and three seconds in nine seasonal starts, the fastest a 1:59.2f clocking at Tioga Downs. She has won twice over the double oval at Yonkers Raceway in 2:01 and 2:01.4. Thus far she has bankrolled $131,991. Madam Hooch will depart from post six in the first race with Mike Simons at the controls.

Tuesdays With Mom is daughter of Credit Winner-Princess Deanna. She has six wins on her resume — the last five consecutive — and one second in seven outings this year. Tuesdays With Mom owns a 1:59f taken at Tioga Downs but also has a 2:00.2 victory over Yonkers Raceway’s half-mile track. Owned and trained by Arrigenna, Tuesdays With Mom has already earned $134,168. Jeff Gregory will be up when the filly leaves from the five hole in the non-betting event.

Though there are others that will probably shine on Wednesday, one thing is for sure — the Monticello Raceway track record of 2:00.4 for 2-year-old trotting fillies, set last year by Nirvana Blue Chip, could be in jeopardy.

Post time for the betting card is at the usual 1:10 p.m.
